COME WEST ALONG THE ROAD Vol. 3 Irish Traditional Music Treasures from RTE TV
Archives 1960s - 1980s Songs from singers in Irish and English; jigs, reels,
hornpipes and airs from solo musicians and groups; step dances, set dances and
ceili dances from exhibition and social dancers - this third DVD from the television
archives of RTE, the Irish national broadcaster, contains over three hours of
outstanding performances from across the rich spectrum of Irish traditional
music.
Come West along the Hood is a popular long-running television series of Irish
traditional music, broadcast since 1994 by RTE, the Irish national broadcaster,
and in its Irish-language version Siar an Bothar since 2001 by TG4, the national
Irish-language channel. The series takes its tide from a well known traditional
reel and is an invitation to the West, which is traditionally the Irish region
of the past.
Researched and presented since its inception by Nicholas Carolan, Director of
the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin, the series was devised and first
produced by Tony Mac Mahon, and it has since been produced by Michael McCarthy,
Tony McHugh, Colm O'Callaghan, Michael Kealy and Niamh White for RTE, and by
Mary O'Riordan, Anna Heussaff, Treasa Bhreathnach, Tomas 6 Neachtain and Deirdre
Ni Choistin for TG4, commissioned by Kevin Linehan for RTE 1 and by Mairead
Ni Nuadhain, Maire Ni Chonlain and Micheal 6 Meallaigh for TG4.
In over 280 programmes to date, the two series have presented and contextualised
discoveries from across the varied spectrum of Irish traditional music, bringing
older viewers performances often forgotten or never seen and introducing new
generations to significant musicians and music of the past, and to the social
and technological history inherent in the material. Footage, in black-and-white
and colour, is drawn chiefly from the holdings of RTE's TV Programme Library
for the station's first three decades, from 1961 to 1989, but also from die
archives of other television stations and from film and newsreel archives. Both
series are now available on die website players of both stations for some weeks
after first transmission.
