The Irish World
DVD OF AN IRISH TURF FIRE IS A ROARING SUCCESS
A very original new DVD could easily be sold on one of the alternative stalls at Glastonbury Festival. 'Irish Peat Turf Fire' (complete with samples of - yes - real peat incense!) recreates that atmosphere we all love and which is so unmistakeably Irish; sitting round a live peat fire with the flames dancing before your eyes and the crackling sounds that just make you feel, well, at home.
Included is a full fire (lh.5m) from a full blaze to smouldering embers, with a fifteen minute section of the main fire at a slower speed and a five minute ember fire. All fires are looped for continuous viewing and were produced to fit all makes of TV.
The Peat/Turf used was hand cut in the west of Ireland and filmed at a 15th Centurv Norman castle on the outskirts
of Galway City, so more Irish than this would be hard to come by. When do you put it on, though? Any time, is the answer. While you're reading, when you have a gathering of friends round, interesting background to a house party with no ashes to clean up the next day!
Since the weather has decided to take one step forward and three steps back, this is the kind of DVD that offsets the bleakness of the weather outside.
There's something truly magic about a peat fire - which Galway man who made this quirky DVD, Dermot Ryan, has understood perfectly. If you've got the real thing at home, this will be like selling sand to the Arabs. If you don't, with its evocations of a mystical, imagined Ireland, this might just appeal. Shelley Marsden.

Warm welcome available on your TV screen
THERE are few things that evoke Ireland as readily as a real turf fire — the smell and the atmosphere surrounding an open fire, conjuring up images many left behind.
Nowadays, few of us have open fires because of smoke control regulations, but a unique venture means that the fireplace can once again be at the heart of every home.
A new DVD shows images of a real turf fire. And to make the experience even more authentic, the DVD comes with a handful of peat incense — harvested at the peat bog in Sean Amhac hi Carraroe, Co. Galway — that you burn whilst the image of the fire is on your TV screen.
The ambient fires, three in total, can be selected to suit your mood and each can play continuously for as long as you require. The DVD was filmed at a 15th century Norman castle, and it's the first time it has been made available in Britain. So if you want to turn TV blackness into a warm welcome.

The Irish Times

WHEN GALWAY city man Dermot Ryan attended a family christening last February a DVD of a log fire was playing on a flatscreen TV over the fireplace. Everyone remarked on the relaxing ambience it created, and Dermot got the idea of an Irish turf fire version.

He had DVDs made in Castlebar, Co Mayo, and packaged them himself. He went to a show in New Jersey where all the Irish and Celtic shops in the US do their buying for the year. Dianne O’Connor, who owns Creative Irish Gifts,
the biggest seller of Irish products in the world, was so impressed by the DVD she asked that it be included in their autumn catalogue.

Three women then came from TV shopping channel QVC, which is beamed into 94 million US homes. He was invited to come on the show and sell the product during a Rose of Tralee special. Just under 2,000 of his DVDs were sold, with more orders coming in through QVC’s online shop.

Most of the DVDs come with peat incense, which evokes the smell of the burning turf. Dermot’s next goal is to get on to the channel’s St Patrick’s Day show.

Keeping the home fires burning

Congratulations to inventor Dermot Ryan who seems set to earn his fortune from a simple idea he got when he attended a family function in a hotel where there was a video playing in a mock fireplace of a log fire. Dermot said to himself, why not make a film of an Irish turf fire so off he went and got a load of hand-cut turf that he videoed burning in a traditional fireplace.

The film lasts for just over an hour and shows the fire blazing brightly to dying away with glowing embers. At first he achieved sales by the 10s and 20s but he got his big break when his invention was featured in a US catalogue that is sent to five million Irish/American homes across the United States. On foot of that, he secured a spot on the shopping channel QVC and, ever since, the orders have been flowing in. If you want to see what it looks like, watch it on YouTube at www.irishturffire.com.

Galway man ‘keeps the fires burning’ in America

A GALWAY man’s novel business idea is “keeping the home fires burning” Stateside.

Galway city teacher Dermot Ryan attended a family christening last February where a DVD of a log fire was playing on a flatscreen TV over the fireplace. It was then Dermot hit upon the idea of creating an Irish turf version.

He had DVDs made by Castlebar firm, CD and DVD Duplication Ireland, and packaged them himself.

Dermot attended a trade show in New Jersey where all the Irish and Celtic shops in the US do their buying for the year.

“I only got into that show because there was a cancellation in the hotel. I stayed in room 911 because nobody else over there wanted to,” he said.

At the trade show he met Dianne O’Connor, who owns Creative Irish Gifts, the biggest seller of Irish products in the world. She was so impressed by the DVD she asked that it be included in their autumn catalogue.

Then shopping channel QVC, which is beamed into 94 million US homes, came calling and Dermot was invited to come on the show and sell the product during a Rose of Tralee special.

He had now sold 5,000 copies of his DVD with orders continuing to pour in. His website is getting hits and orders from all over the world.

‘It’s still hard to believe how quickly things have taken off,” Dermot admitted. He said that there were initial problems getting the right type of turf for the DVD.

“It can be difficult to get proper hand cut turf because the fellas who cut it don’t want to give it to you! Eventually a bit of hard cash made a few people in Carraroe very happy.”

The DVD was filmed in Cloonacauneen Castle, on the outskirts of Galway city.

“Filming it in this great location makes a huge difference. People in America want this product because it’s something that they can’t recreate in their own homes,”
Dermot said. The DVDs also come with a peat incense to recreate the smell of burning turf.

Ronan Courell from CD and DVD Duplication Ireland said that he was intrigued by Dermot’s idea when it was first pitched to him. “I thought it was so mad that it might actually work. It’s the kind of thing that people will kick themselves for not thinking of.”
